Okay, nobody gets it but me. I knew that before I drew it, but the darned thing just kept insisting on being drawn. Any time I started something else, this one shouted until I couldn't think straight. So here's what it's about- crazy creationists think humans and dinosaurs lived together, at the same time, and even that Noah took them on his Ark. So how did they die out? Well, if we stick with their story there's a solution, but not one they'll like. What if the Rapture ALREADY came, and we're the ones "Left Behind"? Not exactly the story the way they tell it, but it fits the mythology perfectly.

I know, too many jokes for one cartoon. I told you it didn't work. At least now I can get on with some new stuff.

In August, 2005, George W. Bush endorsed "teaching the controversy," teaching "Intelligent Design" alongside evolution in our nation's schools. "Intelligent Design," for those who do not know, is little more than reverse-engineered creationish disguised as science, or, as one wag put it, "creationism in a cheap tuxedo."

This is disturbing in its own right. But it gets far more disturbing when you consider the willingness of this Administration to pervert science to its needs.

James E. Hanson, once NASA's director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has accused the Administration of muzzling him and censoring his findings on global warming. He was warned there would be "dire consequences" if he spoke publicly about his findings. They even had an oil lobbyist and a college dropout editing his work at the direct instruction of the White House. And then, at the end of last year, the Admnistration issued new rules requiring all scientists to submit papers and speeches for "review" before they could be presented. And it just keeps getting worse, as now scientists are forbidden from speaking at all if they disagree with Administration dogma.

Of course, there is an easier solution than gagging the scientists. The government could just sign a new no-bid contract for the computers the scientists use:

Enough about science. What about theocracy? Well, that's where it gets interesting. As I noted up front, Bush is pandering to his "base" by insisting that our children get "taught the controversy," as if any time a moron disagreed with Galilleo we should start teaching the earth is the center of the universe. But will "teaching the controversy" be enough? Or will the White House start tilting the controversy, too? It certainly has no trouble doing so when it comes to global warming, so why should it not do so in a fight even more of its "base" holds dear, the inerrancy of the Bible? Gag the scientists, don't let them talk about Ardipithecus ramidus, or Australopithecus afarensis, or Paranthropus robustus, or Homo habilis, or even good old Homo neanderthalensis. After all, if human beings shared the Garden of Eden with dinosaurs, what room was there for ancestors?

Of course, presuming everything started on Day 1 (or is that Day 6?) fully made, what happens to the creatures that stay "created," particularly if they have to compete with the ones that didn't read the Book, so they go ahead and evolve all on their own? I think we know the answer to that:

The truth of the matter is (and now I'm just pumping in cartoons as part of Blogging Against Theocracy Weekend), the whole concept of religion is just one of explaining what you don't understand (and then using it to control people, but that's another story entirely):

While people insist we "respect" religion in a way we would never even consider respecting other fairy tales, does it really have that many good lessons for us? Sure, people pick and choose the parts they like, or the parts that support their own particular hatreds or prejudices, but is that any way to construct morality?

Ultimately, though, it's really pretty simple. The Bush way, the theocrats way, is one that insists we accept faithful ignorance over reason, and that is most certainly NOT the way to assure our nation's future:

From a very visceral point of view I understand the Creationist or Intelligent Design position. I think it's moronic, but I understand it. This was highlighted by a blog comment the other day, and I can't even tell you where I saw it.

A writer objecting to evolution wrote a long screed sarcastically demanding that any defender of evolution attempt to explain how it "just so happens" that we are fortunuate enough to live EXACTLY far enough away from the sun, with EXACTLY the right atmosphere, and EXACTLY the right amount of water, and EXACTLY ... to support human life, if it weren't for some form of higher power designing everything for us. I started to write something sarcastic right back, and what came to mind was something like- can somebody explain how it is that my hat is EXACTLY 5'9" in the air? You see, we are not perfectly situated for the only kind of life by some miracle, we are perfectly situated for our kind of life because this is the environment in which we evolved. My hat is not at exactly the right height by some miracle of design- that's just where you can find the top of my head.

Then I realized what I was really doing was making fun of ignorance powered by insecurity. Arguments about God are, today, what they were a century ago, a millenium ago, an eon ago. "God" is shorthand for "I don't know." "God" is what we can't explain. At one time "God" was fire, the sun, rain. Later, "God" was the guy who killed Bob when Bob ate undercooked pork or never washed his hands before he ate (voila! Kosher laws). "God" made the sun go around the world, and made apples fall from the sky.

Then something odd happened. We started to really understand things. The scientific method made "then call it God" obselete. The scientific method meant we might not know, but it was okay to keep looking until we found out. That was okay for scientists, but it was terribly disturbing to two sets of people. The first were those with tremendous investment, economic, spiritual, or personal, in "God." The second were those who could not understand the science and, more importantly, could not stand not understanding.

Creationism, and it's little brother Intelligent Design, are mechanisms created by those with a tremendous investment in "God" to manipulate those who can't stand not understanding.

Or at least, that's one guy's point of view. And I have a brightly-colored cartoon to show it.

Religion amazes me. In nothing else are so many so sure with so little basis. In fact, the very heart of religion, when you come right down to it, is "believe me without any reason at all, or you lack faith."

But what if they're wrong? What if God is not a magician, a flinger of lightning, bringer of pestilence and plagues? What if he didn't just make everything magically appear? What if, instead, what we call "God," little more than a word meaning "stuff we don't yet understand," is really just as reasoned and logical, as observable and testable, as everything else in the world?

What if "God" is a scientist, rather than a magician? Does that really take away from the glory of all the universe? To paraphrase Shakespeare:

Hath not a Universe stars? hath not a Universe planets, galaxies, quasars, nebulae, comets, asteroids? fed with the same nuclear reactions, hurt with the same pollution, subject to the same analysis, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same reactions and rotations, as a God is? If you observe it, does it not change? if you explore it, do you not learn? if you poison it, do we all not die? and if you wrong it, shall it not adjust? If it is like God in the rest, it will resemble God in that.

South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families is collecting signatures to undo the horrible South Dakota anti-abortion law, and they need help. Any money I raise will go there. Getting this atrocious law overturned will be a huge black eye for the rabid anti-choicers, and will make the other states contemplating similar litigation rethink it.

I got the idea from another cartoonist, who raised more than $2,000, for South Dakota Planned Parenthood and the Oglala Sioux. I was trying to decide whether to do it for South Dakota Planned Parenthood or my local chapter (in which I'm an active participant) when I saw this diary on Daily Kos. It gave me a third idea, and any proceeds will go to the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families.

So if you think this might help raise some money for a good cause, pass it along anywhere and everywhere you blog. ALL money will go to the Campaign. I will keep nothing.
